Lost in Translation: The 50 Americanisms That Annoy Brits Most

As collected by the BBC:

14. I caught myself saying “shopping cart” instead of shopping trolley today and was thoroughly disgusted with myself. I’ve never lived nor been to the US either.

23. To put a list into alphabetical order is to “alphabetize it” - horrid!

36. Surely the most irritating is: “You do the Math.” Math? It’s MATHS.

I don’t understand how math is maths, but sports is sport.  It seems like an inconsistency in both American and British English.

46. I hear more and more people pronouncing the letter Z as “zee”. Not happy about it! Ross, London

Wait… how do the British say it?

Zed,  I believe. This list is a really amazing read. Multiple people ask, exasperated, “What happened to this word?!!” and I just want to respond with, “I don’t know, bro, I guess it didn’t make it over on the Mayflower.”

19. I enjoy Americanisms. I suspect even some Americans use them in a tongue-in-cheek manner? “That statement was the height of ridiculosity”. Bob, Edinburgh

I’m not sure where these people came up with the majority of items on this list. Most of them are grammatical issues that I wouldn’t consider an Americanism - just poorly educated. That being said, Bob of Edinburgh made a great point; Some of them we DO use to be “funny”.

50. “I could care less” instead of “I couldn’t care less” has to be the worst. Opposite meaning of what they’re trying to say. Jonathan, Birmingham

It’s not just you, Jonathan of Birmingham. “I could care less” makes me mental. If you COULD care less than you already do, then you’re just saying it to hear yourself talk.

You know what Britishism I can’t stand? The saturating sense of pomposity from a country whose government was built on incest.

We all know you’re hiding the room in Buckingham Palace that shows all of the family members with two heads and eyes on their shoulders.
